ABSTRACT
Nicolaes Tulp (1593–1674) was a Dutch surgeon. He was also a college tutor and performed anatomy demonstrations on criminals who had been executed. He was educated at the University of Leiden and on graduation rapidly grew a large practice in Amsterdam. He was also responsible for inspection of apothecaries in the city and drove up standards by publishing a pharmacopoeia.
