ABSTRACT

Richard Bright (1789–1858) was an English physician, educator and researcher. He conducted research into kidney disease at Guy’s Hospital and discovered nephritis – originally called Bright’s disease. Contemporaries at Guy’s included Thomas Addison and Thomas Hodgkin. Bright was a dedicated teacher and encouraged his students to always place their patients at the centre of their learning: ‘Acute disease must be seen at least once a day by those who wish to learn; in many cases twice a day will not be too often’ ( 2 ).
