Roderick Random (A Licentiate from Scotland) Facing a Board of Medical Examiners at Surgeons’ Hall
Roderick Random is a fictional character created by Tobias Smollett, a Scottish poet and novelist. The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) describes the eponymous hero’s experiences as an apprentice doctor. He planned to join the navy as a surgeon but first had to go before a board of medical examiners at Surgeons’ Hall. He faced a series of questions but the examiners couldn’t agree on the answers and so he was asked to leave the room. He passed the exam.
