ABSTRACT

Here is a Mrua medicine man with his assistants. The role of the medicine man was to provide care and to pass on his expertise. The striking feature of the image is not how different it is to Western medical education, but how similar. So the person in command leads from the front, the senior assistants follow close behind and the juniors trail along. All have various instruments to carry. A crowd looks on eagerly – but from a distance. With a different dress code, they could quite easily pass for the consultant surgeon (or chief of surgery), the senior and junior registrars, and the house officers.
