ABSTRACT

George Newman (1870–1948) was a public health physician and England’s first chief medical officer. He championed the standardisation of medical education and the education of general practitioners. His thoughts on the importance of medical teachers? ‘In short the teacher in a university is the pivot of the method. He must be learned in his subject, skilled in craft, competent in administration, experienced in research, and catholic in mind. He should reach his post not by favour, by merit of age or seniority, by social convention, but chiefly because he is a teacher and a leader of men’ ( 2 ).
