ABSTRACT
Philip of Acarnania was the physician of Alexander the Great. In 333 BC, Alexander had been warned of being assassinated by poisoning; however, he readily drank the medicine for fever prepared for him by Philip. Alexander made a quick and full recovery. In the scene, Alexander is about to drink and yet keeps his eyes focussed on Philip. The painting is by Benjamin West, an American painter of historical scenes.
