ABSTRACT

The term virtualization has taken on an ever-changing and expanding definition in professional organizations of today. Is virtualization important? If so, why is it good? For that matter, what does it mean? Contemporary professional organizations use terms like virtual organization, virtual product teams, virtual training, virtual design, virtual engineering, virtual reality (VR), and even virtual innovation. Thus, what is all this virtuality? How does it enhance organizational practice? Should virtual anything be part of contemporary business strategy? We use terms like virtualization and virtual reality nearly every day, but what do we mean by those terms and are the associated technologies useful for more than entertainment games and niche research projects?
