ABSTRACT

To support the innovative culture and emerging fast track technology developments, new and novel approaches are required. This chapter provides an introduction to techniques borrowed from agile software system engineering for application to project management and to systems engineering. Agile techniques are proven where speed is required and uncertainty is high. Where traditional techniques seek to reduce uncertainty, agile techniques are able to exploit uncertainty reductions in parallel. This chapter also discusses modernizing earlier techniques, in particular the principles of the original Skunk Works® (registered trademark of Lockheed Corporation) and the principles of agile software x296engineering, to address agility in both systems engineering and program management. We then illustrate the principles of agile engineering and programmatics with a case study of CubeSats for operationally responsive space.
