Humans in the western world have been aware of herons since at least the 14th century. At that time names for heron began appearing in English (heiroun), French (hairon), German, and Greek.179 Much earlier herons were associated with the Egyptian god Osiris, and the Iliad mentions that Odysseus and Diomedea received a heron from the goddess Athena.127
