ABSTRACT
The terms Siamese connection and fire department connection mean the same thing and are used interchangeably throughout this text. FDCs tie directly to the building fire suppression system or standpipe. For automatic suppression systems (fire sprinklers, water mist, foam system), the purpose of an FDC is supplementary, meaning that it serves as an additional supply. For other suppression systems, such as a foam chamber serving large flammable tanks, the FDC can be the primary means to provide water and pressure. We will concentrate on automatic sprinkler systems. A fire pumper can use the FDC to boost the pressure of an operating sprinkler system and standpipes (Figure 6.1).
