ABSTRACT

General Information The veterinary profession is currently witnessing an increased demand from clientele for information concerning performance of the canine athlete or working dog. The canine athlete can present uncommon challenges to the general practitioner. Some examples of these types of dogs include the sprint athlete, the endurance athlete and the workout companion. Some of the sprint activities include Greyhound racing, lure and field coursing, flyball, and agility. Some of the endurance activities include sled dog racing, upland bird hunting, game hunting, herding and the detection dogs. Recently there have been an increasing number of dogs participating with their owners during workouts. Workout companions accompany their owners while they jog, skate, hike, bike or perform many other exercise activities.
