ABSTRACT

Primary Wound Closure Definition and Indications Primary wound closure is performed relatively soon after the wound has been inflicted. These wounds are considered clean or clean contaminated wounds. Closure could be within the first 6 hours after infliction. It should be performed when the animal and the wound tissues are in good condition. There should be a minimal amount of contamination and tissue trauma or thorough debridement and lavage should result in tissue suitable for wound closure and the surgeon believes healing will progress uneventfully. Good hemostasis, lack of dead space and closure without tension are other qualities indicating primary closure. A surgical wound created under aseptic conditions is an example of the ideal for primary closure.
