ABSTRACT
For some infectious diseases, including newly emerged infections, no safe, effective vaccine exists. It is then necessary to respond to a new outbreak with temporary measures, such as promoting social distancing and administering antiviral drugs, if available. Much consideration is given to such measures when developing preparedness plans for pandemic influenza, for example. In this chapter we illustrate how to incorporate the effect of social distancing into models.
