ABSTRACT

The surgeon achieves decisions through best evidence, experience, ethics and patients’ needs. Patient preference is important and all procedures should be performed on patients who are fully and appropriately consented regarding the benefits and risks of their operative procedure. Modern intra-operative imaging such as the use of augmented reality in robotic surgery or in-built constraints to prevent damage to a particular territory may aid the surgeon in bypassing anatomically susceptible areas. The surgeon who thoroughly understands the advantages that accompany variation of surgical approaches can perform the correct procedure for each patient. Excluding surgical skills, there are five dangerous character faults which may affect a surgeon: recklessness, cowardice, hasty temper, arrogance and dishonesty. These are the five besetting sins of a surgeon, ruinous to the conduct of operations. In addition to disease status and technical issues, these are five dangerous faults.
