ABSTRACT

Different types of forests occur on different parts of the landscape, and their growth rates differ because of temperature, rainfall, and soils. As a result, the same species of trees commonly occur in different areas on the landscape that share similarities in these characteristics. In the

Southern Appalachian Mountains, scarlet oak occurs most often on dry, southwest-facing ridges, white oak on side slopes, and northern red oak in moist, cool coves. Similar patterns of tree distribution occur in bottomland hardwood forests of the South. Overcup oak occurs in places that are subject to frequent and prolonged flooding, whereas other oaks, such as Nuttall and cherrybark, occur on ridges, levees, and other elevated locations in the floodplain that seldom are under water.
