ABSTRACT

Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of an acute abdomen in the world and one of the most common indications for emergency abdominal surgery. Its worldwide lifetime prevalence is estimated at 1 in 7.1 Acute appendicitis occurs most often in the second and third decades of life, with the peak incidence of approximately 233/100,000 seen in the 10to 19-year-old population. The incidence also differs based on gender, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.4:1. Men (8.6%) have a greater lifetime incidence of appendicitis when compared to women (6.7%).2
