Referring to the definition sketch for the conceptual model and recalling Darcy's Law, it is easy to see that sK'/m' represents the rate of vertical groundwater flow ("leakage") through the aquitard (the gradient is the change in head, s divided by the length of the flow path which is equal to the aquitard thickness, m'). If the aquitard is considered impermeable, K' = 0, sfB2 = 0 and Equation 9.1 reduces to Equation 8.1 (Model 3).
