The governing equation is derived by combining Darcy's Law for flow in the aquifer and aquitard with the principle of conservation of mass in a radial coordinate system (Han tush, 1964)

Kz, and S are the aquifer horizontal and vertical hydraulic conductivities and storativity, respectively, sis drawdown, r is radial distance from the pumping well, z is vertical distance from the aquifer top, t is time, and K' and m' are the aquitard vertical hydraulic conductivity and saturated thickness. The term sK'/m' is the· rate of leakage through the aquitard.
