ABSTRACT

Genetically modified (GM) organisms are living species whose genome has been altered, often by the addition of a gene, for specific reasons such as conferring protection against pests like corn rootworm or resistance to herbicides such as glyphosate. For example, Monsanto created the transgenic corn MON 863 by inserting DNA sequences that encode a modified Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Bb1 protein that is selectively toxic to Coleoptera (beetles) such as corn rootworm larvae.
