ABSTRACT
Many sites suitable for bottomland hardwoods will not be flooded during the growing season and recent wetland protection and restoration programs have encouraged landowners to restore wetlands on thousands of acres of cropfields. In these cases, directly planting wetland shrubs and trees will significantly advance the development of the new swamp. Old crop fields are especially amenable to planting since site preparation and planting can often be carried out by mechanical means.
