ABSTRACT

Lung transplantation has continued to evolve at a rapid pace since Dr. James Hardy performed the first human lung transplant in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1963. In the subsequent 10 years, 36 lung transplants were performed worldwide with catastrophic failures that usually occurred within a few days following transplantation. In 1981, Dr. Norman Shumway and colleagues successfully performed three heart-lung transplants at Stanford University Hospital; two of the three recipients were alive and well 1 year after transplantation. In 1983, the Toronto group performed the first successful single-lung transplant, and in 1986 they reported their experience and stated that the recipient was leading a normal lifestyle with no limitations.
