ABSTRACT

DEFINITION AND CLINICAL FEATURES Necrobiosis lipoidica is a granulomatous and necrobiotic disorder of collagen that affects the skin of the anterior pretibial surfaces. It is associated with diabetes mellitus. The disease results in a thinned and atrophic epidermis with yellowish, discolored plaques and dilated underlying vessels (219). Ulcerations may occur easily with trauma given the atrophic nature of the skin. Usually the lesions are multiple and bilateral. Although sometimes painful, often the patient’s chief complaint is the unsightly cosmetic appearance of the lesions.
