ABSTRACT
Making a definitive diagnosis of asthma in very young children is often difficult, and should only be done when the clinician is satisfied that alternative diagnoses have been excluded. Furthermore the diagnosis of asthma is hampered by the knowledge that up to 50% of infants wheeze at some stage in the first year of life, but not all of these will go on to develop chronic asthma.
