ABSTRACT

Nutritional support for the malnourished, hospitalized patient is critical in order to improve patient outcomes. The past 50 years have shown tremendous improvement in our ability to deliver nutrition to at-risk patients. Parenteral nutrition (PN) was introduced in the 1960s and has continued to be an important tool for nutrition support for patients with inadequate gastrointestinal (GI) function. The development of specialized enteral nutrition (EN) feeding formulas creates another opportunity for nutrition-based disease management of unique patient populations.
