ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 is an introduction to Fundamentals of Combustion Engineering. The chapter points out the need for the study of combustion. The trends of world energy usage – history and prediction – are discussed source-wise. The scenario of electricity generation is also presented. The desire to minimise emissions is also pointed out to promote the necessity for new technology generation. The major application areas of combustion are delineated. Different types of classifications of combustion are also discussed. The chapter also contains a brief outline of the book.
