DEFINITION Wernicke’s disease (thiamine deficient encephalopathy) is a disorder characterized by rather abrupt onset of any combination of nystagmus, gait ataxia, conjugate gaze palsy and mental confusion in association with nutritional deficiency, especially due to alcoholism.
