ABSTRACT

Sympathetic nervous system (720) Efferent Sympathetic nerve fibers descend from the hypothalamus and other regions of the brain, through the lateral tegmentum of the midbrain, pons and medulla, to the intermediolateral cell columns of the spinal cord between T1 and L2, where they synapse with neurons of the preganglionic sympathetic efferents. The nerve fibers exit from the spinal cord through the anterior roots, join the proximal part of the nerve root, and then leave the root via the white rami communicantes to join the sympathetic chain which consists of a series of ganglia and nerve fibers extending from the base of the skull to the coccyx.
