ABSTRACT

Hyperkinetic movement disorders are classified according to the phenomenology of the movements into the following categories: • Dystonia: sustained twisting repetitive movements

and posturing. • Tremor: rhythmic, sinusoidal oscillation. • Athetosis (‘without fixed position’): slow writhing of

distal limbs and fingers. • Chorea: random flowing movements from one body

part to another. • Myoclonus: brief, abrupt shock-like jerking

movements. • Tics: repetitive simple or complex movements,

suppressed by an effort of will. • Stereotypies: complex coordinated motor behaviours

repeated at the expense of other activities.
