ABSTRACT

THE PREVENTION OF TYPE 1 DIABETES The autoimmune process in Type 1 diabetes begins years before β-cells are destroyed. Measuring HLA susceptibility markers and autoantibody tests allows those at high risk of developing the disease to be identified. At present there is no reliable method of preventing its development. Studies in small groups of children have shown that aggressive insulin therapy in those likely to develop Type 1 diabetes may delay the development of the condition as a result of reduced βcell activity.
