ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DPLD), or interstitial lung disease, denotes around 200 conditions characterized by pathology mainly affecting the lung interstitium (as opposed to respiratory pathology affecting the airways, such as in asthma and COPD). This group of diseases generates considerable diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainty, but precise diagnosis is important in determining prognosis and optimum treatment.
