ABSTRACT

The subject of this chapter is usually dealt with by the community and hospital midwife and the obstetrician, with the appropriate involvement of the medical microbiologist/virologist. The primary care physician has a key role as well, and the most important in managing the urgent situation, such as the example given in 165, which is then the basis for the Quick Action Guide. Practices should use these for training purposes, and have protocols in place for the prompt management of these situations. Important topics are: • Management of the pregnant patient exposed

to a rash-like illness.1 • The management of the pregnant patient who

develops a rash.1 • Screening for asymptomatic bacteriuria in

pregnancy. • Management of urinary tract infection (UTI)

in pregnancy. • Group B streptococcus in pregnancy. • Antenatal screening for blood-borne

virus (BBV).
