ABSTRACT

Urine specimens are the commonest specimen submitted to the microbiology laboratory from primary care, accounting for approximately 60% of the workload received. Given this fact, it is surprising how often the whole process is mismanaged. There are a number of pitfalls in the process from deciding when to take a specimen through to prescribing antibiotic therapy.
