ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to highlight the issues in primary care relevant to the genital tract specimen. The Quick Action Guides summarize the main points in assessing the patient, collecting the specimen, and giving treatment.1,2 Of key importance is considering the possibility of the patient having a STI, including ‘blood-borne’ viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and advising the HIV test.3
