ABSTRACT

Introduction and significance There are a number of root rot diseases caused by various pathogens on broad (or faba) bean. Five different Fusarium species are particularly important. One of them, F. solani f. sp. fabae, has been very damaging in China, Japan, and Sudan, with losses of up to 40%. Significant root rot problems are also caused by species of Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. Three other pathogens, Thielaviopsis basicola, Macrophomina phaseoli, and Helicobasidium purpureum, cause only occasional problems.
