ABSTRACT
Six weeks following an operation a 72-year-old man was referred to the rheumatology clinic complaining of paraesthesia and numbness affecting the lateral aspect of the left leg. He had type 2 diabetes, managed with a combination of metformin and insulin. Six months previously he had been persuaded by his wife to give up smoking, and since that time, he had gained over a stone (6 kg) in weight.
