ABSTRACT
Introduction It is likely that a few bacteria enter the bladder on occasion and are flushed out at micturition. Urine should thus be regarded as sterile and hence the presence of bacteria (bacteriuria) and pus cells (pyuria) is indicative of an infective process in the renal tract.
