ABSTRACT

Approximately 18 million people are blind from cataract (visual acuity less than 3/60 [20/400]). In most countries of Africa and Asia, cataract accounts for approximately half of all blindness. Approximately 60 million more are visually disabled by cataract (visual acuity better than 3/60 but worse than 6/18). An estimated 1.25 million additional people are blinded or visually disabled by cataract annually (global incidence).
