ABSTRACT

All ocular injuries are considered to be emergencies and should be treated promptly. Immediate referral of any ocular injury is necessary if the health care worker who examines the patient initially is unable to treat the injury. Seemingly minor injuries to the eye, such as corneal abrasion, may become infected and result in serious corneal damage, loss of vision, and even blindness if not managed correctly. Thorough ocular examination is vital (see Chapter 16). Note the following:
