ABSTRACT

Visual acuity is a measurement of the eye’s capacity to see detail (sharpness of vision, dependent on the macula of the retina). Distance visual acuity is a measurement of the ability to read standard figures on a chart at 6 m (20 ft). Near visual acuity is a measurement of the ability to read standard figures on a card at 40 cm (16 in). Vision is the sense of sight as a whole, which includes visual acuity and peripheral, or side, vision (visual field). (The term vision is not equivalent to visual acuity.) Functional vision is visual acuity and peripheral vision sufficient for the person to carry out his or her normal activities.
