ABSTRACT

Distribution The soybean cyst nematode, H. glycines, is widely distributed. The first official report of the occurrence of the nematode was from Japan in 1915. It has subsequently been reported from China, Korea, the former Soviet Union, and Taiwan in Asia. In the new world, H. glycines is widely distributed in the USA, and is reported from Ontario province in Canada, from Argentina, Brazil, and Columbia. In the USA, the nematode was first reported from a single location in North

Carolina in 1954 and is now present from Florida in the south to Minnesota in the north, and from New Jersey in the east to Texas in the west. Most infestations in the new world are believed to have occurred with the importation of soybean seed or soil from Asia (as a source of rhizobia inocula) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There is evidence, however, to suggest that the nematode may also be native to North America as a parasite of weed hosts. The nematode occurs across a wide range of temperate to sub-tropical environments and in a wide range of soil types.
