Barnegat Bay and Other Northeast Estuaries
This chapter describes the bays and estuaries covered in this book from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to Cape Henry, Virginia, including Boston Harbor, Buzzards Bay, Long Island Sound, New YorkNew Jersey Harbor, Barnegat Bay, Delaware Bay, and Chesapeake Bay. The estuaries and bays vary in size and configuration, in their watersheds and airsheds, in their mix of developed and undeveloped land, in their roles in commerce and industry, and in their commercial and recreational fishing. They also differ in water quality and in the species compositions of their aquatic and coastal ecosystems. Most of the birds we discuss occur in all of these estuaries, but the numbers vary, partly along the north-south gradient.
