ABSTRACT

Vulval pain affects a significant number of women and can negatively impact quality of life and sexual function. Vulval pain may be due to a number of specific disorders or pain syndromes, such as vulvodynia or vestibulodynia. Women may present with vulval pain alone or in conjunction with other symptoms such as vulval skin changes, itching, or vaginal discharge. In addition to assessing the nature of the pain, one should also determine: any triggers, precipitating events, the impact of the pain on the patient’s function and well-being. Examination should include inspection of the vulval skin, speculum and bi-manual examination, and inguinal lymph node palpation. Inflammatory skin disease and systemic disease can both cause vulval pain, often through ulceration and excoriation.
