ABSTRACT

Before the reform and opening up in 1978, relevant departments of the Chinese government had successively formulated, enacted, and implemented appropriate food hygiene standards, food hygiene inspection methods, and

other rules and regulations based on the then national conditions. After the reform and opening up, the Chinese food industry developed rapidly with the deepening of economic reform. Since the beginning of the new century, the Chinese food safety legal system has been gradually established and improved along with the development and changes in agriculture, food processing industry, and international food trade, and in particular, a tremendous change in governing ideas has occurred. China initially established a relatively complete legal system for food safety as indicated by the implementation of the Food Safety Law on June 1, 2009.
