ABSTRACT

The spiral model is an iterative process that was first developed for software development. The iterative nature of the process makes it ideal for large system development. The process starts in the center of the determine objectives, alternatives, and constraints quadrant of the spiral in Figure 3.1, and then moves clockwise and outward. There are four main phases of each cycle through the process: (1) determine objectives, alternatives, and constraints; (2) evaluate alternatives-identify and resolve risks; (3) develop and verify next level project; and (4) plan next phase. One of the benefits of the spiral model is that before the start of a new cycle there is a review and commitment to move forward.
