ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the need for energy conservation in hotels and the measures that can be undertaken to achieve it. The resource usage by hotels and its impact on environment has been studied along with the green initiatives of the major hotel chains and small operators around the world. The twin approach of energy efficiency through optimal usage of resources and consumption of energy generated by renewable sources are prerequisites for sustainability in the hospitality industry. The changes in design and operations within the hotels will result in energy conservation leading to a sustainable future. The ways and means through which hotels can conserve energy, which would lead to lesser carbon dioxide emissions and global warming, nurture biodiversity and result in financial savings for the hotels.
