ABSTRACT

There are many other less common mineral admixtures besides those described in the previous five chapters. The motive behind the considerable amount of research that has been carried out on the possibility of using these materials as components of cement and concrete is to find satisfactory solutions to the environmental issues related both with cement and concrete production and waste management. Some of these mineral admixtures like calcined clays, metakaolin (MK) and rice husk ash (RHA) are already in commercial use, whereas most others are under development or being investigated merely for scientific interest. It is neither possible nor meaningful to include all such materials within this book yet some general characteristics of those with pozzolanic properties are given in the following sections.
