ABSTRACT

Although it is a versatile material, conventional concrete may have certain limitations for various special applications and conditions and may not be able to meet the requirements of some stringent specifications. Studies for certain modifications and improvements in conventional concrete have led to various special types of concretes. As in conventional concretes, it is possible or sometimes necessary to use mineral admixtures in many special types of concretes. Several special concretes are briefly described in this chapter with emphasis on their significant properties and the effects of the use of mineral admixtures on those properties.
