ABSTRACT

Coal is a major fuel for energy production in coal-burning thermal power plants throughout the world. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, around 40% of global electricity was supplied by coal burning (Heidrich et al., 2013). Several different coal combustion products (CCP) such as fly ash (FA), bottom ash, boiler slag and flue gas desulphurisation gypsum are obtained by burning pulverised coal in thermal power plants. According to 2010 figures, the total annual CCP production had reached about 800 Mt (Heidrich et al., 2013). Around 70% of this total CCP obtained is FA (Von Berg and Feuerborn, 2005).
