ABSTRACT

In this book we have only scratched the surface of optimization; we have ignored entire branches of optimization, such as discrete optimization, combinatorial optimization, stochastic optimization, and many others. The companion volume [64] continues the discussion of optimization, this time focusing on the use of iterative optimization methods in inverse problems. The discussion there begins with constrained optimization and the use of sequential unconstrained iterative algorithms. In this chapter we preview some of the topics treated in greater detail in [64].
