ABSTRACT

Knowledge-based systems (KBS) depend upon expertise that is built into computer programs. However, these programs are drastically different from conventional algorithmic programs. Traditional computer programs work on data to produce information through the use of algorithms that precisely describe the way the data must be manipulated. A shortcoming of this approach is that these programs cannot deal with uncertain or missing data, nor can they explain the significance of the information that is generated. To convert information into knowledge requires intelligence. Knowledge systems combine information about a subject with different ways to think about the information.
